Movie of Single in San Diego 1957-1959 and lastly Marta and My Baby Boys in 1961

In 1956 when Colleen and I came to San Diego to teach school, we rented a small cottage near the Zoo.   We later moved near the 4th Ward in  North Park and had two other roommates.  This was also the Stake Center and there were about 17 of us who were teaching in San Diego, another large group of returned missionaries who were now giving their service in the Navy and a smattering of locals so a large group of young people between the ages of 19 and 26.

When our former college roommate Marta graduated and wanted to come to San Diego to live with us, we moved to Hillcrest and lost two roommates and acquired another, who was not part of the 4th Ward LDS group.  Everyone had Chevies but I had a white Dodge with red seat covers.  It must have been easy to buy a car with a new job.

Marta started dating a boy from the Ward and his name was Quentin and these are his movies of goings on at our Hillcrest apartment, a trip to Phoeniz for Marta to meet his parents, activities at the Ward and other ward guys and gals and the marriage of Colleen to her pilot boyfriend Mel from the Ward.  I was dating Bill, not a member of the Ward, but you can see me leave to crew with him as I drive off in my white Dodge.   We sailed in his 17 foot sloop.  He was not LDS.  We had races on the weekend usually both Saturday and Sunday afternoons.  Evidently Quentin was never there to take pictures of Bill when he picked me up for a date.

The apartment was two level on the back and had these gorgeous poinsettias growing in both the front and the back.  However the basement had a dirt floor and there were thousands of cockroaches it seemed.  We discovered them in our kitchen when we came home at night and turned the light on...wow!

The last of the film is Marta and I with our two baby boys when Marta and Quentin came to San Diego to visit in 1961.  She had married Quentin and moved to Thousand Oaks and Richard and I had married and were now living in Pacific Beach.  We had met at 4th Ward when I came back from BYU summer school and  he had come in the summer from BYU to work as an appraiser.  I was now in my fourth year of teaching kindergarten and had rented a 2nd story apartment as I was living alone.  Richard and I met the last week in August and married October 23rd.  I had broken up with Bill in May.  Johnny was born August 18,1960 and Marta's first child was born about the same time.  Her second child was a girl and they named her Janet.
